The Playground Circle

Story Illustration

In a bustling neighborhood, there was a bright and friendly 6-year-old named Alex. He loved going to the playground to play with his friends after school.

One sunny afternoon, as usual, the playground was filled with laughter and chatter. Alex joined his friends who were playing on the swings and the monkey bars. However, as the game of tag began, Alex noticed that some of the kids formed a tight circle excluding one boy, Leo, who was sitting alone on a bench.

Alex didn't like seeing anyone left out. Stepping out of the game, he walked over to Leo and asked softly, 'Would you like to play with us?' Leo looked surprised and then smiled shyly and nodded. Together, they joined the game, and soon, everyone was included in the fun, running and giggling through the playground.

As the sun began to set, Alex's mom called out that it was time to go home. On their walk back, she noticed the slightly pensive look on Alex's face and gently asked, 'I noticed you inviting Leo to play with you. How did that make you feel?' Alex paused, pondering the question, and then said, 'I felt sad when Leo was alone, but happy when he played with us. I want everyone to feel happy.' His mom gave him a warm smile and said, 'That's called empathy and kindness, Alex. It's wonderful that you care about others' feelings.'

Arriving home, Alex felt a sense of warmth and contentment knowing that he had made a difference for Leo. As he drifted off to sleep that night, he thought about how inclusion and kindness could brighten someone's day.
